Kirti Chakra Sambhu Roy, Dharmanagar, Tripura

THE WARRIOR BURU

“A Monument on the Memory of a Soldier”

The Duty of a soldier is to protect his motherland at any cost which includes even his supreme sacrifice. On the other hand, we the civilians are to recognize them at any time by any means, and at anywhere. Martyr’s do not have any materialistic demands; they are born to give protection to their countrymen, whereas we the countrymen are responsible to make their legacy live long so that the other Countrymen can be motivated to make their way into the same field. Today it is a great pleasure and scope for me to write about such a warrior who was recognized with the Kirti chakra by the supreme commander of India, He is greatly known as Sambhu Roy, Constable 210 CoBRA, KC & His parent’s Buru.

Sambhu Roy was born in a great day at Dharmanagar District Hospital on 18/06/1990. The Lucky Parents of Sambhu Roy are as His Father Dwijoraj Roy and Mother Anjali Roy, His Father being a daily wage painter and his mother a housewife, His 1 brother and 2 sisters with him being the youngest of all. Sambhu is the closest with his Cousin Pallav Roy. Generally, Sambhu was a friendly fellow having good relations with almost everyone in his village.

Bhagyapur School

Sambhu Started his pre-primary education at the Bhaigyapur Anganwadi, followed by his primary education in the Bhaigyapur School, He changed to Chandrapur and DNB schools for his Secondary and Higher Secondary education. In his school days he was very much active with extracurricular activities beyond his academics. He was also interested in NCC. Later on, he moved to the Dharmanagar Degree college to continue his higher studies. Sambhu’s Family explained to me that Sambhu was fond of Sweets and Cricket; he even spent his childhood playing at the BSF Campground just adjacent to his residence. He was also very interested to join voluntarily for the social welfare works in his locality.

In between all these he was not completely sponsored by his parents, Due to the uncertainty of his father’s profession & financial hardship he at sometimes had to do Daily wage laboring such as Earth cutting and other hustling work under MGNREGA to sustain his educational needs, such struggle and harsh educational environment cannot stop him to join the NCC this of his act makes us understand that from his early days Buru wanted himself to be engaged with Nation serving, even due to his excellence in NCC he was nominated for and awarded the NCC Presidential award by the then President her excellence Smt.  Pratiba Patil.

His Work holism never stopped there, in my talk with his father, his father exclaimed that “Buru was always interested in his house chores, even he had great plans for constructing the house we are living in today, this boy would never bring his mind together, the one thing that never left him is his struggle” Sambhu Roy with the aim to provide early relief to his family opted for more than 30 Govt. interviews but this ill system failed to recognize such a Patriot who can even sacrifice his life for the country. But Sambhu did not learned to stop struggling, lastly he was selected in the CRPF in 2015, when he was departed to serve in the 210 CRPF Battalion in Dalgaon Assam, soon after he was ready to act in force for one the prime causes of Disturbance for the CRPF, The Naxalites, The Whole Red Corridor was witnessing immense violence at the time, But most of the attacks were constant in the deep and dark jungles of Chhattisgarh, The region was so harsh that even at some places sunlight would take days to reach, All these toughness could not stop the Man from serving for his motherland, it was thus the result of such hardship that just after 3 years of his service in 2018 he was promoted to be a part of CoBRA The Special Force specialized for Jungle Warfare and Guerilla Tactics. At his initial days at the 210 Dalgaon he was very friendly with his brothers in arms as Mr Manoj, Indrajit and Rajib who had guided him at the camp

Now moving to the context of his valor, his father proudly exclaimed to me each and every aspect of his operation on 3rd April. On the 2nd Day of April 2021 at around 8:30 pm Sambhu casually called his father explaining that he will be on an operation for the next 5 days and accordingly his pho will be off, he repeated the same talk with his Cousin Pallav too, here his father added that this of his tone had something unusual, as he could sense something off here, even while leaving for the service 20 days prior to the operation he surprisingly opted for a picture with his parents this was unusual too as he didn’t did the same any day before, avoiding all the odds the situation goes by, on 3rd April around 11:00 am Sambhu’s Family gets to know about the encounter where the news of one personal who was abducted came up as forest fire, his father mistook Sambhu as that missing men, but it was never the characteristic of Sambhu to be so easily abducted.

Post Operation Retaliation

The same day around 8 in the evening the news of the martyr came to be true Sambhu  Roy was no more, He was martyred by the Naxalites while saving his senior Dilip Kumar, in the mean he was shot 4 bullets in his abdomen but this cannot stop him to catch 1 Naxal alive, The Sacrifice of Sambhu along with his mates saved the life of the whole battalion which was to be marched through the same path, firing on the same spot continued from 11 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon. In the whole of the operation 5 Naxals were killed, Sambhu himself caught one naxalites who was later brought in by the Special Forces.

On the same night I got to know about him from social media, I was too disheartened to hear such tragic news. On 6th April 2021 he was brought into his home village via. IXA, Thousands of people were waiting along the roadside to get a single glance and to convey their respect to the fallen hero. It was a very sorrowful moment when his body just reached his family, everybody along with his family Sambhu’s Body being bought in by the CRPF broke into tears. His Military cremation was performed just nearby his residence as per the protocol of CRPF. I was physically present during his cremation. The pride for the fallen sol dier and the spark of revenge could be seen at the eyes of all the youngsters present there. He was a hero for the whole village who had given his everything for his mother nation.

One day during a discussion with Sambhu’s Father, I asked him about that black day. He Replied: “At some day we all are to die, but how we die matters the most, I can proudly say that My son gave his life for our mother, for our security, for our life” This spark in the eyes of the old man gave me a brief history about Thousands of such Virs who are giving away their close ones for the Motherland. On 12 July 2024 Sambhu Roy was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra for his unshakable braveness and Mountain spirit while fighting the forces striking our mother.

Here I like to state that there are thousands like Sambhu who are laying down their lives for the nation every day, But the hard thing is quite negligible of them are being recognized by us. Till today we are failing to set a concrete definition of a true hero it is thus, an irony that not a single Media or Publication house has ever tried to cover this story of Sambhu. Sambhu’s story is just a tip of an iceberg, there are 100s of such mementoes people in our town of Dharmanagar itself who have achieved high heights, this of my writing shall be a testament to all those brave hearts and stars of our Nation as well as Our town who are giving their everything for our everything.
