Surya Sen, Master Da, Chittagong, Chittagong Armory Raid

 Master Da

Surya Sen

Surya Sen was Known for recruiting a group of young and passionate revolutionaries, which was popularly Known as the Chittagong group. He was also an active member of Jugantor and Anushilan Samiti which was actually used as an underground society for anti-British revolutionaries, the samiti merged as a group of Indian Fitness Clubs and Gyms giving training to youth to fight against the British raj in India. The Chittagong armoury Raid was an attempt on 18th April 1930, to raid the armoury of police and auxiliary forces from Chittagong of Bengal Province in British India now in Bangladesh.

Before capturing the two main armouries Sen destroyed all telegraphs, Telephone and railway connections to Calcutta. To fund his further missions against The British Colonial rule he planned to loot an imperial bank at Chittagong.

The Armoury Raid

After that on 22nd April 1930 while they took shelter On Jalalabad hills hear Chittagong cantonment several thousand troops of British army attacked on them. Over 80 British troops and 12 revolutionaries were killed during the gunfight in the battle of Jalalabad hills. Sen dispersed along with his fellow revolutionaries to a nearby village within small groups to escape somehow. A point to be noted is that a large part of the Chittagong Hills was a part of the then Imperial state of Tripura, so it might be very possible that Master Da would have graced us all with his presence in our own Soil of Tripura.

The Chittagong revolution group suffered a fatal blow when master da Surya Sen was arrested on 16th Feb 1933 from the Gairala village after a tip of from an insider of the group

The Gallows Where Sen was Hanged

On 12th Jan 1934 Sen was hanged along with his associates and according to the reports Sen was brutally tortured as even his nails and eyes were removed by the britishers. Just before his execution in his last letter to his friend Master Da has written - "Death is knocking at my door. My mind is flying away towards eternity. At such a pleasant, at such a grave, at such a solemn moment, what shall I leave behind you? Only one thing that is my dream, a golden dream – the dream of free India. Never forget the date, 18th of April, 1930, the day of the eastern Rebellion in Chittagong. Write in red letters in the core of your hearts the names of the patriots who have sacrificed their lives at the altar of India's freedom."

Such was the man's spirit and courage, the that the thought of losing his life for the Sake of his Country and Countrymen’s Freedom bestowed him.
